Authorised use of veterinary medicines
- When treating a specific disease in a specific species, ALL clinicians are advised to check for, and to use, medications authorised for veterinary use in that condition and animal species, in the country they are in, whenever such products exist.
- For a complete list of SPCs (Summary of Product Characteristics), UK clinicians are specifically referred to the VMD website product information database (PID) at http://www.vmd.gov.uk/ProductInformationDatabase/ The VMD PID provides complete, continuous, up to date information regarding authorised products, withdrawal times and all information regarding appropriate treatment of food producing species.
-
VMD PID SPC : Specific Product Characteristics (SPC) are held by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) as a datasheet for each authorised product on their Product Information Database (PID) unless authorisation is in some way centralised. See - http://www.vmd.gov.uk/ProductInformationDatabase.

Prescribing and dispensing compliance
- Cascade/ Extra-label data sheets: These are available at www.vetformulary.com for hundreds of "Active substances" are easily printed in practice livery from this site and issued to clients whenever medications are dispensed "off-label", or outside of the manufacturer's packaging.
- Cascade/ Extra-label data sheets: These ensure veterinarians have identified the name of the vet, the medicine (active substance), the expiry date, special precautions in the user and target species, special storage and disposal instructions.
- Information sheet must be carefully completed and always have the product expiry date inserted, the vet's name clearly written, and any special precautions identified.
- An SQP or Pharmacist can also fulfill aspects of their duty of care using the vetformulary.com compliance system
- This helps clinicians wishing to fulfill the requirements of the VMRs and the RCVS PSS Medicines section of accreditation.
- Our system helps to ensure that practitioners in the UK comply with legal dispensing requirements and avoid possible litigation or criminal prosecution when prescribing and dispensing off label products.
- This site concentrates on species, conditions and situations where no authorised product exists, however various authorised doses are given to assist clinicians wishing to derive unauthorised "cascade" or "extra-label" doses.
The site user is reminded of the following:
-
VMD PID SPC : Specific Product Characteristics (SPC) are held by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) as a datasheet for each authorised product on their Product Information Database (PID) unless authorisation is in some way centralised. See - http://www.vmd.gov.uk/ProductInformationDatabase.
- Medicines not authorised for veterinary use represent an undefined risk to the patient, owner, consumer and environment.
- Should an adverse reaction occur any approach to a human generic company is unlikely to generate an adverse reaction report to the VMD.
- Product recalls for a human generic product may omit the veterinary user as this is not a recognised sales route.
- Contacts with the pharmaceutical company marketing human medicines (this is the address on the label) are likely to be met with a lack of knowledge on veterinary use.
- Contact with and support from the pioneer company for advice is inappropriate.
- There is no underlying assurance provided for animal use of a human generic by a supporting regulatory process.
Food Producing Animals
- The site presently avoids data for food producing animals: Withdrawal times and other information described here may be subject to alteration, and may differ from country to country. These should always be independently checked for accuracy by the attending clinician.
- It is not our intention to act as a resource providing reference data for animals in food production. We refer clinicians to the VMD PID and product SPCs available there for up to date withdrawal data. http://www.vmd.gov.uk/ProductInformationDatabase/
- Clinicians outside of the UK are referred to their own countries regulatory bodies for further specific guidance in these areas.
